WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE ABOVE EPISODES BELOW.
10 - Hurricane Fluttershy
I'm not a BIG fan of Fluttershy but I like that there are a lot of ways I relate to her - her love for animals being the huge one. However, I recently went through something that I realized was very similar to this episode. I was trying to get into a certain program and I must've tried like 5 times during the window that I was eligible to enter it. I studied and worked as hard as I could to get in, but it just didn't happen. For that reason, I really felt for Fluttershy when she had gone through that whole training montage and it still wasn't enough. But the episode also helped me to remember - I did my best, and that was physically the most I could do. Even if it isn't enough, Fluttershy and I gave it our all.
9 - Castle Mania
I'm not really sure if I can fully explain why I loved this episode so much. There was a lot that was pretty predictable about it, but it was a great way to boot off the best season of the show. I really love how they paired the friends off into little mini-adventures of their own, especially Rarity and Fluttershy. In fact, I'd say those two were the reason I love it so much.
Rarity's high-class dignity (and lack thereof) and Fluttershy's softness played off of each other hilariously. I also love how Rarity constantly got angry at the castle rather than scared of it. XD All for the sake of art.
8 - Pinkie Apple Pie
Not only is it an episode focused on Best Family, but this has got to be one of the funniest episodes in the whole show. Family road trip episodes are always fun, and easily relatable. And to see it with the Apple Family gave them all-new depth. Then add a super-optimistic Pinkie into the mix. Sounds like a winner to me! Not to mention a flippin' catchy song, which snagged #2 in my Top 10 Favorite MLP Songs (see that on my Youtube channel here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBc-do…
). Even my mom, who is very confused by my love for the show, seemed to enjoy this episode. 7 - Apple Family Reunion
Have I mentioned Applejack is my fave of the Mane 6? Yeah, this is another episode that expanded the Apple family, and I appreciate that. It was cool to see the Apples all together for one big party, botched as that party was. I love the concept of a small town coming together to help with a huge chore - especially a barn-raising - and had we been in the Apples' position in this episode, I'm not sure how many of us would've been eager to help Applejack after she turned the reunion into one big mess. But family is a strong bond, and I loved how this episode conveyed that. Also, an Applejack song and another catchy one at that! I don't wanna give away anymore of my countdown, but……..yeah. XD6 - Return of Harmony, Part 1&2
Discord. Discord Discord Discord. Do I need to say anymore? It's funny, I have a hard time watching Season 1 now because the episodes that followed it were that much more amazing. Besides the introduction of such an awesome new character, I think this brilliant season opener really established to the fans the ways the show would constantly grow and improve in the future. The fandom was beginning to really boom by this point too. But mainly I love this one because of Discord.
I love the guy as the "annoying brother" kind of position he's in now, but he made for a pretty boss villain. He opted for mind-messing rather than physical force and he did it with unmatched and unabashed swag.5 - Sweet and Elite
It took me a while to like Rarity, but I eventually clicked with her as the impassioned artist. I still have a bit of a hard time putting together why I like this episode so much - a lot of it probably has to do with the awesome guy that is Fancypants - but I think I've figured out the brunt of it. We really see Rarity in a different light in this episode. I love how in Ponyville, we see that she is clearly the most elegant one. But in Canterlot, a place full of high-class ponies, we suddenly see a bit more of the ditzy real-girl personality come out. She fits in because of her social manners, but stands out because of her warmer and gentler spirit. She made some awfully bad decisions in this episode, yes. But she also did risk herself in front of everyone at the end. I love the Mane 6, but Rarity was pretty bold to claim them at that exact moment when they barged into that party with no idea how to act and made displays of themselves. XD4 - Twilight's Kingdom, Part 1&2
I think this is about on every MLP fan's favorite list at the moment. This two-parter took everything the show was and cranked it up to 11 in my opinion. There's a lot about it to rave about - the terror that was the new villain and how disturbingly different his methods were, the interactions between the four princesses and how they really had to come together, the conclusion of the Keys storyline, the fact that the treehouse - a place we've known since Episode 1 - is now GONE… and of course, that Dragonball Z-level fight scene between Twilight and Tirek. If I showed you that scene out of context, would you even look at it and say "Hey, that's My Little Pony"? But for me, the crowning factor in this two-parter was Discord's character arc. I know a lot of people didn't like it - but as a character designer, it was everything I'd ever hope for. I'll just leave this quote I've made on a few occasions here:"To me, this really stretched Discord further as a developed character. Before the Season 4 finale, he was just considered this all-powerful, OVER-powered troll that was around to play the LOLs. The fact that someone actually got the better of him (and not in a good way, like Fluttershy), the fact that he was tempted, the fact that someone actually beat him down into a defeated magic-less state when everyone - including him - never expected him to be reduced to that, the fact that he was used and hurt and he actually reached the point where he was humbled. That's CHARACTER development and it makes me HAPPY!!
Also…that Dislestia fodder. AAAAAAAAAAAA-- 3 - Pinkie Pride
Is there anyone out there that doesn't like this episode?
I'll admit, I wasn't sure how I felt when I'd heard that they were bringing Weird Al onto the show. But they handled his character better than I ever imagined they would. Shows all to often have a star cameo just for the sake of having a star cameo and not much more. But Cheese Sandwich actually became his own character with his own backstory and I LOVE IT. Also, I'm not much of a shipper (except the obvious one above…), but I am FULLY behind CheesePie. The fact that they had already given Pinkie and Cheese a history together really helped that. And a personality like Pinkie's requires one that it can bounce off of. Someone that can keep her smiling when she may not be able to do it herself. 2 - Keep Calm and Flutter On
I swear my friend and I pretty much RPed this stuff before it ever aired. XD We loved the idea of Fluttershy being the one to "tame" Discord and be like a mother towards him. And this episode was all of that coming to fruition and more. It was also the beginning of the such an awesome character arc for Discord (again, see above). We got our first glance at Discord being a real character - someone who had doubts and insecurities and needed a friend more than he let on. And it assured all of us Discord fans that our favorite draconequus was here to stay and wasn't going to be stranded to stone for another season and a half.1 - Secret of My Excess
I like Spike. I LOVE Spike. Spike is my favorite character and he really needs more love. I've also come to really love dragons. As an animal and all-around science lover, I love how dragons are kinda the "create-your-own-biology" mystery. The only set rules we have for dragons are that they breathe fire, they tend to hoard, and that they have a certain look depending on if you're talking Western or Eastern culture. Other than that, there is so much potential. And I think that's why I love this episode so much. The world of MLP dragons has barely been touched and there is SO much potential left to explain "the world of dragons". You can refer to my gallery to see my take on the MLP dragon world, but that's besides the point.
This episode is the closest I think we've gotten on learning of the MLP dragon culture (no, I'm not going to give that to Dragon Quest….. Since when has it been a good idea to draw an opinion on a species based off a group of their teenagers?). And we're learning about the dragon ways alongside Spike, pretty much. Also, Rarity sassed a full-grown dragon without even knowing it was Spike. XD Way to go, girl.
